We want to live in a society in which breastfeeding is embraced as the norm, where babies are breastfed for as long as they need, and the art of mothering is valued and nurtured.
To shift attitudes and beliefs around breastfeeding by increasing public awareness of the importance of breastfeeding for babies, mothers, families and communities.
To promote communication and collaboration among individuals and organizations working to support breastfeeding.
To promote professional development for health care providers working with breastfeeding families.
To fund, facilitate and carry out activities which promote, protect and support breastfeeding including:
developing and delivering breastfeeding education events both for health care professionals as well as mothers and the community at large.
paying shipping costs of donated breastmilk between the Greater Victoria area and the Milk Bank in Vancouver for families who need assistance.
Established in 1997, the Breastfeeding Matters group was born out of the need for support and networking within the breastfeeding community and the need for continuing education for lactation consultants.
Since then we have hosted many educational events featuring nationally and internationally recognized experts in breastfeeding medicine and management.
We have organized and co-hosted, with VIHA, the annual Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge for the last 9 years.
