Victoria’s Best Places to Breastfeed and the Breastfeeding Friendly Initiative
Last year at the 2008 Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge, mothers at the event were asked to nominate a Victoria business or place where someone helped them feel welcome and supported. To recognize these businesses, nominees were awarded a "Best Place to Breastfeed" certificate and received a "Breastfeeding Friendly - Anytime, Anywhere" window decal to display at the entrance to their business.
Any business or place can be Breastfeeding Friendly. The only criterion is that there is friendly staff who make breastfeeding mothers feel welcome and accepted in their establishment. No amenities are required. Decals are available upon request, free of charge and include a listing in the Directory of Breastfeeding Friendly Businesses.
The Breastfeeding Friendly initiative is a pilot project designed to encourage and normalize public breastfeeding. Project sponsors include Vancouver Island Health Authority, Breastfeeding Matters-South Vancouver Island and Island Parent Magazine.
